Welcome to HBMS’s Flin Flon Soils Study website, your source for up-to-date information about the Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) underway in Flin Flon, Manitoba, and Creighton, Saskatchewan.
When a Manitoba Conservation soil study reported elevated concentrations of some metals in area surface soils, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited (HBMS) began the HHRA to better understand the nature of soil conditions in the area, and to determine if exposure to these soils may present unacceptable, long-term health risks to residents and visitors.
HBMS is committed to making the HHRA an open, transparent process from start to finish. We will keep you informed throughout the process, and welcome your input at every stage to make this study as meaningful and relevant to you and your community as possible.
This website will provide information on the study, details on upcoming events such as Community Advisory Committee meetings, and access to study reports as they become available. Please contact us if you have any questions or comments.
HBMS is conducting the HHRA in cooperation with the Manitoba and Saskatchewan provincial governments.
No expected immediate risk to human health
While this preliminary assessment does not suggest that an immediate human health risk is present in this area, additional investigations are now underway to refine the information and determine if there are potential human health risks under certain exposure conditions.
"A preliminary review of the results suggests that the risk to human health is most likely low, but a more comprehensive human health risk assessment is needed to better and more fully determine the risk."
